E-learning on Children’s Rights and LGBTQI

E-LEARNING

Proud to Stand with Every Child

Why is the LGBTQI perspective so important for inclusive and non-discriminatory child rights work? And how can you, as a child rights advocate, help strengthen the rights of LGBTQI children? These are the questions explored in the online course Proud to Stand with Every Child.

Children who identify as LGBTQI – that is, children who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or intersex – face significant barriers to enjoying their rights to protection, survival, and development. They experience discrimination, violence, oppression, and violations in many areas of life – in society, at school, in leisure activities, in healthcare, and sometimes even within their families.

Although it is crucial to include an LGBTQI perspective in child rights work, many people feel uncertain about how to apply it in practice. This training aims to change that. The course explores how norms around gender and sexuality shape children’s living conditions and everyday lives, how children’s rights are connected to LGBTQI issues, and how you, as a child rights advocate, can help promote and protect the rights of LGBTQI children.

The course is open to anyone involved in child rights work, is free of charge, and is available through Save the Children’s Online Academy. If you don’t yet have an account, you can create one there.

The online course has been developed in collaboration between the Save the Children Youth Sweden and Save the Children Sweden, with funding from the European Union.

REPORT

Not Too Young to Be Myself
– Voices on Being a Child and LGBTQI

Grown-ups have a lot of opinions about LGBTQI kids, but they rarely listen to what we in that group have to say. It’s not uncommon for grown-ups to question whether we really know anything about our gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation. But we LGBTQI kids exist—and our experiences are real. It’s time for you to step into our shoes, so you can understand what it’s like to be us.

We think you should read SCYS’s report to get an idea of how it feels to navigate the world as an LGBTQI kid. Gaining more knowledge and deeper understanding is a must to ensure every child’s rights.

Mapping of LGBTQI Children’s Rights

MAP OF RIGHTS

How is the Child Convention Protecting LGBTQI Children?

This mapping aims to clarify and strengthen the relationship between children’s rights and LGBTQI rights, in particular by showing how the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child protects the rights of LGBTQI children.

Note! LGBTQI children are obviously covered by all the rights outlined in the Child Convention. However, certain rights are particularly relevant to LGBTQI issues and these are the rights we have included in the mapping. You can read a digital version of the mapping here.
